2nd and 3rd Grade Music Informance (for use with What Do You Do With an Idea?)

This is a 2nd and 3rd grade musical informance to be used with the book, What Do You Do With an Idea? by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom.

An informance is a musical program designed to educate the audience on a musical topic. This informance highlights musical creativity by asking students what they can do with their musical ideas.

The entirety of the musical material in this informance is student-arranged.

Grades:

This program is designed for 2nd and 3rd grades. There are a total of eight songs per grade level.

What’s Inside:

  • Welcome letter with tips for applying the informance idea in your school

  • Songs and Activities

    • Each song has sheet music, a musical analysis, stick notation, game directions, an improvisation or arranging activity, instrumentation, and ideas for other creative options.

    • Any of the songs in this program could be arranged in a different way, replaced with different repertoire, or omitted.

    • The last song in the program is a “teacher choice.” Ideas for song selection, as well as arrangement ideas, are given so that your informance can reflect your students’ favorite songs and creative skills.

    • This script comes as an editable Google Doc. Note that for copyright purposes, this script gives cues before each song, and does not include the entire text of the book.

  • 3 Program Options:

    • The black and white program is a single 8.5 x 11 page

    • The color option is meant to be printed on 14 x 11 and folded in half.

    • The digital program is designed to be read on a cell phone. Parents scan a QR code to read the program.

  • 3 Parent Invitations (Email and Flyers)

    • The email is typed out so all you have to do is include your specific date and time, then copy and paste!

    • The printed flyers come in both a black and white, and color option.

  • 4 Stage Layout Ideas

    • Every school scenario is unique! Our “stages” are often a cafeteria, school gymnasium, or MPR. Use the editable stage layout options to make your program flow smoothly.

    • There is also an option to create your own custom stage layout from scratch.

  • Slides

    • The slides include National Standards for Music Education and California State Standards for Music Education. They come in Google Slides so you can easily edit them.

    • They also highlight a specific creative skill for parents to notice during the program.
